Is TEFL Heaven Legit? | Become Certified | How it works | Free Salary vs Living Costs Guide

In 2017, I embarked on a journey that, unwittingly to me, would change my life. Post graduation, I had a thirst to travel and explore the world. This thirst paired with a desire to create an impact is what led me to discover teaching English abroad. Amidst my research, I stumbled across many TEFL companies and certification programs, one of them being TEFL Heaven. I booked a program and in April 2017, I began my journey and TEFL certification course in Thailand. 

I signed up for a 6-month minimum commitment and I went into it with an open mind. Long story short, those 6 months have turned into 6 years later. Since then, I’ve traveled most of Asia and taught in three different countries including Thailand, Vietnam and China. The last 6 years of my life have truly been transformative. Living abroad has gifted me with incredible experiences, friendships and memories that I’ll cherish for the rest of my life.

Is TEFL Heaven Legit?

The short answer is yes! TEFL Heaven is a UK ‘based’ company and I use quotation marks because the staff and those who run the company are all located in different parts of the world. Everyone on the team has at one point taught abroad or been through the programs themselves. This means everyone on the team understands what going abroad involves and can effectively advise candidates on what they need.

TEFL Heaven offers a wide range of destinations and different types of programs. The key things they offer are TEFL certification courses, logistical support and guaranteed job placements. The program types available vary by destination and are affected by one’s eligibility.

The most popular program is designed for complete beginners, those who do not have any TEFL certifications or prior teaching experience. This was me when I began my journey, I had never taught ESL before and I was very much a ‘beginner’. This program includes a 4-week in-person and in-country TEFL training course followed by a guaranteed job placement. As part of the course, cultural immersion activities will be included so you can learn more about the country you’re in. This 4-week period isn’t just for training either, this is the perfect opportunity to create some connections with other new teachers. While training with people from all over the world, you’re able to learn from one another, form a sense of community and create long-lasting friendships. I am still very close to the teachers I trained with on my course 6 years ago and I’m even traveling and living abroad with one of my fellow trainees today. 

Other programs offered include online certification courses and ‘Placement Plus Programs’ for already certified or experienced teachers. If you’re already certified or experienced, these programs include a 1-week cultural orientation in the country followed by a job guarantee and all the support that’s needed. 

Many of the programs with TEFL Heaven include extra benefits including accommodation while training and even flight reimbursements. What’s included in the programs does vary by country, so you’ll need to explore the specific program locations you’re interested in.

How to Become Certified

TEFL Heaven has a long list of destinations to choose from and locations are all over the world. Locations offered are in Asia, Europe and Central America / Latin America. A few pieces of personal information will be required to identify the locations where you are eligible to teach and gain a work visa. 

Elgibility and Criteria

Four main pieces of criteria will affect whether or not you are eligible for a specific destination: 

1. Nationality 

2. Highest level of education earned / Bachelor’s Degree

3. Age

4. Being a Native or non-native English speaker. 

TEFL Heaven has a program for most types of candidates, there are options for those without a Bachelor’s degree, young or old and even for non-native English speakers. While some criteria might make you ineligible for a specific location, chances are there may be an option for you elsewhere. 

I think it’s best to explore the programs and locations that call to you, where are you most interested in going?  What new corners of the world do you want to explore? What cultures spark your curiosity?

How it works 

The process of being accepted into one of TEFL Heaven’s programs begins with an application. After you apply and your application is accepted, you’ll then be able to book a time for a virtual interview. These calls are usually conducted by Zoom and other online platforms and they make it super easy to choose a date and time that works best for you. 

Once you pass your interview, you’ll then be able to book the program you’re most interested in! 

The payment structure with TEFL Heaven is usually broken down into two installments, making it more affordable when you book in advance. Start dates are flexible which means if you need to change the date after you’ve already secured your spot, you can!
